About/Membership

Psychoanalysts are professionals that help people with all sorts of suffering experiences. They are essential professionals for our society. AAPSP was created to congregate psychoanalysts with Luso-Brazilian-Angolan-Capeverdean backgrounds in the United States. According to official organizations, there are almost 2,000,000 people in the US that has Portuguese as their primary language. 

Currently, AAPSP accepts psychoanalysts and psychoanalyst in training in different membership modalities. There are also options for psychotherapists, counselors and psychologists who work with psychodynamic approaches. 

The association goals:

-  An institution independent of any psychoanalytic institute,

- Having its board democratically elected by its members

- Non-profit

- Acting as support and integrative organization for its members

- Offer periodic scientific meetings to present papers, seminars, etc.

- Offer membership certificate to all its members as a sign of recognition of their training 

- Help with information for certification, insurance, professional practice and license information for US states

 

Our first meeting happened on 07/16, at 10am via Zoom and elected the board and created the first roll of members.

The term of office will be 2 years.

 

Memberships will be divided into:

 

(P) Psychoanalyst. For those who have already completed their training and have documentation to prove. A minimum of 3-year length Psychoanalytic Training, an academic degree in any field, 3 years of personal analysis and at least one year under supervision are required for membership in this category. 

(PP) Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. For those who are psychodynamic psychotherapists and are not psychoanalysts. A minimum of a 2-year psychotherapy training, a academic degree in any field are required for membership in this category. 

(APP) Applied Psychoanalysis Professional. For those in other areas such as counseling, psychiatry and psychology and use psychoanalysis as a clinical approach. A Degree in the the field of: Psychology, Psychiatry, Mental Health Counseling, Couple and Family Therapy or related areas are required for membership in this category. 

(S) Student. Analysts in training in 3-year length programs that also requires three years of personal analysis and at least one year under supervision are required for membership in this category. 

Application process:

1. Applicant submit the application below;

2. Membership Committee request by email the prove of credentials regarding the category of the applicant;

3. Membership Committee votes on the application and send it to the Board of Directors its recommendation for approval;

4. Board of directors vote on approval;

5. Applicant is informed to pay the membership fee.
